Graduation Advice For Life

Posted June 3, 2011 @ 9:18 PM | by Marianne Wells

Greetings,

Someone asked me to re-post my graduation letter blog from last year about advice for life.  The letter was provided to our daughter several years ago when she graduated from high school.  I want to share the essence of the message that we gave to her.  From a yoga perspective it relates well to each of us in our daily lives.  I hope you enjoy it! Please feel free to share this message with others.
Namaste,
Marianne

Graduation Day

This is a great time in your life.  You stand right on the edge between childhood and adulthood.  Look backwards and see all of the fun times in school, with your friends, and (hopefully) your family.  Look forward and see the potential of a new life for yourself, freedom to make your own choices in life, and even more friends and experiences.

As you stand here today at this moment of your life, know this:

We love you very much.  Much of what we have accomplished in our lives we owe to you.  The drive to create a warm, loving home focused two very young parents quickly into more productive and centered lives.  It was not easy at times, but your mere presence in our lives made the challenge less so.   We would not be here today as the family we are if you were not in our lives.  God has truly blessed us with you.

You make our lives easier.  You possess a rare blend of personal qualities...enthusiasm towards life, goal oriented, and people friendly.  We have learned from you to dwell much less on the negative, and much more on the positive.  You have always looked at life (other than cleaning your room!!) with a smile.  People look to you to rally others to a common cause.  You don't judge others, only their actions.  You play fair.  Please keep these qualities for they will help you go far in life.  Remember, your character is your destiny.

We will miss you.  We are quickly approaching the time when you won't be in our home every day.  That's part of life...it means we have all prepared well.  So let's celebrate a job well done.  Just because you are not in our home does not mean you're not in our lives.  We can close our eyes and see your big blue eyes and beautiful smile any time we choose.  Hug your Dad whenever you can.  Call your Mom...often.  And remember your brother has never lived without his big sister....don't lose that connection, ever.  You are each other's best friends throughout your lives together.

Choose wisely in life.  When you make a mistake, learn from it.  Take risks, but consider the consequences as you look to the rewards...please.  When you don't know - ask.  Try new things. Surround yourself with excellence.  Don't avoid the things you're not good at...work on it and grow from it!  Have fun.  Completely and thoroughly enjoy the moments of your life.

Most of all, take time for yourself ....every day! You need to look in the mirror every day and tell that person you're looking out for them.  Taking care of yourself first prepares you to take on the rest of the day's challenges.  It sets your attitude for life.  Keep God in your thoughts every day - a spiritual person bends but does not break.

Congratulations.  We love you very much.
Forever your Mom and Dad
