Happiness is THE WAY - additional thoughts on self-discovery

Greetings,

I've been very touched and overwhelmed by the positive response to my recent newsletter - Happiness is THE WAY.  Many readers shared their feelings about my message- Thank You!  I'll share a few with you :

  • Thank you Marianne!  Your message speaks to me in a very personal way considering where I am at in this moment in my life.  I am going to act now on my journey of self discovery to finally find what I am all about, and what's really important to me.  You made this so very clear today.  Thank you.
  • Your newsletter gave a great message - keep it up!
  • I posted your newsletter to my Facebook page so my friends could have a peek.  My mom loved it so much she started to re-evaluate her life!  Keep 'em coming!

If you missed the newsletter and want to read it, I encourage you to click on the link above-hover your cursor over the words Happiness is THE WAY -  (even though I should have attributed the quote not to the Upanishads, but rather to G.D. Morgan - sorry about that!).

The idea that truly knowing yourself leads to happiness is very powerful.  For it also can very often lead to success in life. We all know the story of Brad Pitt parading around in a chicken costume early in his professional life.  Sure he felt silly, but the experience was valuable.  When he started acting in movies, he took chances and offered great input to his directors.  Because he has known himself and his talents, Brad Pitt has provided some very interesting movie characters over the years.

Paul Theroux - author of many novels including The Mosquito Coast and Blinding Light - wrote in the July issue of Men's Health magazine about - Figure Out What You Want.  Here's the message:

"After I graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1963, I had no money, no prospects, and no encouragement or support from my family.....My obvious choices: graduate school, some sort of boring job, or the U.S. Army.  Instead, I applied to the Peace Corps and was sent to...Central Africa.  There my active life began-with a new language, a new landscape, new friends, a real job as a teacher, and new things to care about.  Away from everything I had known, I began to understand who I was and what I wanted. ..."

So whether it be the message from me, Ben Stein, Steve Jobs, or Paul Theroux - it all boils down to finding out who you are and what makes you happy.  And the best way to do that is to get away from your familiar patterns and surroundings, to embark on self-study, and experience the wonderful lessons this beautiful world offers.

Knowing oneself well also helps with relationships.  In the same issue Men's Health cites an Ohio State University study of 62 undergrad couples. Authentic men tend to end up with women who are more accommodating, trusting, and communicative.  They found when men's actions and values were consistent, their girlfriends were more likely to behave in ways that benefitted the relationship.  Openness leads to an ease about expressing feelings.  I'll bet the study finds the same for authentic women as well.

In Marianne Wells Yoga School Teacher Training , we study the Sutras of Patanjali daily - the seeds of self study and reflection. By doing so, we learn that happiness is an inside job.  You've heard the saying that in order to attract a lot of cheerleaders in your life, you must be a cheerleader to others.  Make yourself so happy that when others look at you they become happy.

Happiness is the way.

Namaste,

Marianne
